SooBin Hur Nominated for Undergraduate Excellence
Award
International Student Services is pleased to announce the nomination of SooBin Hur for a 2008 Harvey Meyerhoff Undergraduate Excellence Award for Leadership,
Scholarship and Service. We have nominated SooBin for this award because of the many contributions she has made to the UW Campus and the Madison community. SooBin has been a very active participant in the Students Uniting Business and Engineering Club here on campus, serving as their vice president during the 2006-2007 academic year. She also served on the Student Advisory Board for the Undergraduate Program Office (SABUPO) in 2006 and 2007. In this role, she gathered opinions and thoughts from various student groups on campus to propose new ways the School of Business could serve its students effectively and creatively. Finally, SooBin currently works at TRIO tutoring students in math and economics.
In addition to her work with student organizations, SooBin has worked in many capacities with International Student Services ( ISS). She was chair of the 2005-2006 ISS Student Advisory Board and a participant in the BRIDGE program in fall of 2006. She has also worked in the ISS Welcome Room during orientation week, welcoming new international students to campus and giving them advice on how to adjust to life on campus and in Madison.
SooBin has also given back to the community through numerous volunteering roles. She ran a marathon to raise money for the Big Brother’s Association, and she is a member of the Alliance Building Committee, which works toward building an anti-racist movement. She says: “My priceless leadership experiences at University of Wisconsin-Madison in the past three years have shaped me to become a strong leader and an effective communicator. . . .I am eager to advance my successful and invaluable leadership skills through Madison society as a whole extending beyond campus area and thereby help improve the lives of others and share my incredible experiences with them.”
As the ISS nominee for this award, SooBin will be honored along with twenty five nominees from other campus departments at an awards luncheon in May, where she will receive her award from Mr. Harvey “Bud” Meyerhoff, a 1947 University graduate whose generosity makes this award possible.
Our sincerest thanks to SooBin for the multiple contributions he has made over several years in serving the community and improving the quality of experience on campus for international as well as domestic students.
