WRITING ASSISTANCE
The Writing Center is located at 6171 Helen C. White Hall, but it offers services at several other locations on campus.
Individual tutors help students to develop writing skills.
The Center also offers classes, and all services are free of charge.

REGULAR CLASSES
MFIS English classes
Madison Friends of International Students, Inc. offers English classes to help international students and their spouses learn or improve their English. The classes meet two mornings a week during the semester, at the First Baptist Church, 518 North Franklin Avenue. The teachers are volunteers. The classes are arranged by ability level: beginner, intermediate, and advanced. There is a small registration fee (currently $35 per semester). For information call the MFIS office at 263-4010 between 10 am and 12 pm, Monday through Friday.
A Mother/Child class is offered for mothers with children two years and younger. Mothers stay in the same class with their children, an English teacher, and a childcare worker. The additional childcare costs $90 per semester. For more information, contact MFIS.
Program of English as a Second Language (ESL) at UW-Madison
The Program in English as a Second Language, open to students and faculty, offers several English classes. The department office is located at 5134 Helen White Hall (263 3780). Madison Area Technical College (MATC)
MATC, 211 North Caroll Street, offers daytime and evening classes in English as a Second Language. Call the Division of Alternative Learning 258 2440 at the downtown campus for information on classes in English as a Second Language. Permanent residents, U.S. citizens and refugees may take these classes at no charge. If you hold a visa in the categories A through J, ask which classes you can attend and how much it will cost.
Madison English as a Second Language School (MESLS)

Wisconsin English Second Language Institute (WESLI)

David's Free English Class
A free class offered every Monday night for international students on campus (399 Van Hise). The main topics discussed are informal English and American Culture. CONVERSATIONAL PRACTICE
MFIS Conversation Partner Program
Meet with an American and talk about what interests you. Meetings are informal, and time, place, frequency, and content of the meetings are determined by you and your partner. Contact MFIS if you're interested.
International Conversation and Coffee Hour
Every Friday during the semester, 12-2pm in Union South, room 160. An opportunity to practice conversational English with Americans and other internationals. For more information, contact MFIS.
Greater University Tutoring Service
GUTS is located at 302A Union South, 263 5666, http://guts.studentorg.wisc.edu/, guts-ce@mail.studentorg.wisc.edu, open 1-5pm, Monday through Thursday. This free program consists of UW students from all fields of study who volunteer their time to tutor other students for two hours a week. Offers tutoring and workshops in conversational English.
International Friendship Center
701 State Street, 255 7214, http://userpages.itis.com/the_ifc/. IFC is a ministry of Calvary Lutheran Chapel. International students and their families can practice conversational English skills with American students. The center is open from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, Monday through Friday. Opening and closing hours may vary.
