WISCONSIN
The name "Wisconsin" comes from an American Indian word meaning "gathering of the waters." It is called the Badger State because some of Wisconsin's first residents were miners who lived at first in burrows in the hillsides, like the animals called badgers. The University mascot is called "Bucky Badger." Our state is also called "America's Dairyland" because our farmers are among the top dairy producers in the country.
