School Transfer

As an F-1 international student, the US federal government must be informed of the educational institution you are attending in the US. If you have been studying at another US educational institution and now plan to attend the University of Wisconsin-Madison, there are several ways to make the change known.

Non-SEVIS to SEVIS Options for Transfer of Immigration Documentation
Students currently holding a non-SEVIS I-20 have two options:
1. If you leave the US between attending your current educational institution and UW-Madison, use the new UW-Madison SEVIS I-20 to re-enter the US along with your valid passport and F-1 visa stamp. Officials at the Port of Entry will process your immigration documents; the official may or may not take your I-20. (If they take your I-20, it will be mailed to International Student Services (ISS) at eh UW-Madison and ISS will return it to you.) By entering the US on your UW-Madison I-20, you are informing the US government that you will be attending our institution.

2. If you are staying in the US between attending your current educaitonal institution and UW-Madison, you must complete a Transfer Notification. Begin by completing the student portion of this form and then submit it to your international office at your current educaitonal institution. A Designated School Official at your current school must complete the remaining portion of the reverse side of this form and submit it to ISS at UW-Madison. ISS will produce a new SEVIS I-20 for you to attend UW-Madison. You must attend an ISS orientation program prior to the start of classes.

SEVIS to SEVIS Instructions for Transfer of Immigration Documentation
If you are currently holding a SEVIS I-20, you must begin the transfer process by completing the student portion of the Transfer Notification form and then submit it to your international office at your current educaitonal institution. A Designated School Official at your current school must complete the remaining portion of the reverse side of this form and submit it to ISS at UW-Madison. ISS will be able to produce your UW-Madison SEVIS I-20 after the release date noted by your current school. You must attend an ISS orientation program prior to the start of classes. Please note: you may no longer work on your current campus after the release date. Likewise, students participating in OPT may no longer work off-campus after the expiry of their EAD card or the release date, which ever comes first.
